Tiphanie Fletcher, 25, was driving with her baby and toddler in the car when a runaway trailer slammed into her SUV. Deputies have charged Kelsey Cartwright, 48, with second degree vehicular homicide. Investigators say it's likely that Fletcher never saw the trailer before it smashed into her car. It smashed into the driver side door near the side mirror and struck Fletcher in the driver seat. She died later from catastrophic injuries. Deputies found parts of her Ford Explorer wrapped around the front of the trailer. The investigation centers on the hitch ball, which Fayette County Sheriff Barry Babb says was too small for the trailer hitch attacked to it. Sheriff Babb says Cartwright was driving a Chevy Silverado pickup truck. He was pulling the trailer which carried a home fitness gym. The incident happened on State Road 92 south of Fayetteville on September 26 around 9:00 p.m. The trailer came unhitched and went into southbound traffic. It struck Fletcher's SUV, which left the roadway and struck a tree. Cartwright is also charged with other traffic offenses. Sheriff Babb says simple precautions could have prevented the tragedy that took the young mother's life, such as always using safety chains. Investigators say they will look at all the factors that may have contributed to the trailer becoming unhitched from the pickup truck that was pulling it.
